Would the left have protested the verdict in Augusto Pinochet's trial?

Had Pinochet been tried and found guilty of murder, would there have been feelings of outrage from the leftists and the human rights groups? Would the left have claimed that he did not receive a fair trial?

Of course not. Pinochet overthrew (with help from the USA) the oldest continuous democracy in Latin America because he didn't like the way the vote went.

The moral of the story: If they finally catch you, slow down your heart and raised your blood pressure and keep it there until you die of old age, at home, in your own bed.

No, not really, my dear. Salvador Allende won that country's presidency with a razor-thin plurality vote of about 36% in 1970. After three years of Allende destroying the country's economy and shredding its constitution, the Chilean people and the Chilean military had had enough and overthrew the government without a peep of protest from Washington.

Like a good communist, Allende wrapped his lips around a revolver instead of facing the wrath of his own constituents. That Washington gave aid to the opposition groups at the time is entirely plausible, since Allende was getting big, fat checks from the politburo in Moscow; however, your fantasy of direct CIA involvement there is absurd. They were too busy introducing crack cocaine into black neighborhoods at that time, remember?

Nevertheless, your self-loathing and bottomless hatred for your own country is a source of endless amusement to me. The moral of the story is that Chileans who think exactly like you screwed up Chile, and Chileans who think like me managed to put her back together. Sadly, it took 17 years and a lot of dead Marxists, but ol' Pinochet did get the job done and made that country into one of the, if not the, most prosperous nation on the South American continent.

Pinochet bowed to international pressure and left office in 1990, meanwhile Fidel Castro (if still alive) has ruled that country with an absolute iron fist for 47 years. I have seen the destitution there with my own eyes, which leads me to favor the Pinochet model as far as Latin American strongmen are concerned.

It is ridiculous at this point to deny that the CIA was involved in overthrowing Allende. Allende's Marxist economic problems would likely have been bad for Chile, and he would likely have been voted out of office. Instead our country destabilized Chile's economy and politics, and supported a fascist, torturing dictator.

I repeat, Allende was elected with roughly 36% plurality vote. He would NOT have been voted out of office, he would have been killed in an inevitable "Chilean Civil War" had he gone on unabated and had Pinochet not stepped in to put the country back together. I guarantee that would have caused more than 3000 dead Marxists and 100,000 refugees, and destabilized S. America far worse than the heavy hand of Pinochet. Zontar, You haven't mentioned anything about the atrocious double standard vis-a-vis "left-wing dictators", such as papa Fidel. 17 years of Pinochet, as opposed to 47 years and counting in Cuba, provided the little bastard is even still alive.

No, Pinochet was great for the economy of Chile. You gotta break a fews eggs to make an omelet. Surely a socialist sympathizer like you, Zontar, should understand that you must sacrifice a few people for the good of many more. 3,000 dead is actually an acceptable number in the grand scheme of things.

Pinochet had a moustache. Moustaches are a very bad thing.

Well at least Pinochet didn't strangle Allende to death with his bare hands like Mengistu did Haile Sellasie!
